Acoustic Guitar Magazine Review: Feb 2002 For those who are ready for a more advanced and demanding look at swing and jazz guitar, John Carlini's two-video set, "Chord Solo Guitar," takes basic swing arrangements to a whole new level. Anyone who has marveled at the grace and sophistication of great solo jazz guitarists like Joe Pass will want to check out Carlini's videos, which open the door to such demanding arrangements. Incorporating a host of jazz standards, including"Take the A Train," "Angel Eyes," "Nuages," "Stompin' at the Savoy," and "Stardust," the videos delve deep into the theory needed to make a single acoustic guitar sound like a band of seasoned jazz cats. The videos are aimed at helping the student play the melody, chords, and bass line in such a way as to suggest the tune's complete arrangement. The production values are very strong, with great lighting, sound and split-screen camera work. What's most impressive is that Carlini, who may be best known for mentoring flatpicking wizard Tony Rice, manages to present these complex concepts clearly and simply. Alternating between fingerstyle and flatpicked arrangements, he gives the student a broad understanding of the fundamental elements of jazz chord soloing.

Music Educators Journal Jan. 2003 Guitarists who have mastered a number of chords and inversions can use this video to add some new jazz tunes to their repertoire. Guitarist John Carlini teaches viewers how to incorporate chords, melody, bass lines, and rhythms to play a complete jazz solo. He begins by teaching the Duke Ellington standard "Take the A-Train". As he teaches the song, he demonstrates practice techniques and encourages players to learn as many different versions of a chord as possible so they can have options as they learn new tunes. He finished the video by demonstrating four more tunes and offering brief advice on playing them. A tablature book is included.
